Improving Nurse-Patient Ratios are Put into Legislation – Travel Nurses Have an Advantage

In March 2009, it was brought before legislation that there should be a mandated nurse-patient ratio to reduce costs and save lives.

Cited in an article,  Sen. Daylin Leach of PA said, “keeping the patient-to-nurse ratio at 4 to 1 could save up to 72,000 lives annually and reduce costs.” Leach also commented by saying, “This law will guarantee the safe care of patients while creating conditions in our hospitals that will help retain and recruit RNs.”

Although Leach and others were talking specifically about Pennsylvania RNs and health professionals, there is still much controversy about the nurse-patient ratio in other states as well.

Travel nurses could benefit from this proposed legislation by medical facilities creating more positions for certified nurses.
